"Poems by S.Y. Agnon and rich illustrations by Arieh Zeldich would be a beautiful family gift. From Alef to Tav, many of the poems will appeal to all ages, but for adults, translator Robert Friend has included notes on his translations; the original Hebrew texts are given in the back of the book." -- Jewish Journal, March 26, 1999
beautiful gift book This beautiful book would make a nice gift for an older child in (or even graduating from) Hebrew school, or, indeed, for the school itself. Agnon's original poems, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet, are given in the back section of the book in easily readable Hebrew font. At the front are nice translations by Robert Friend which retain some sense of the original poetry, and detailed pen-and-ink drawings, which are quite stunning, to go with the poems. There is a brief discussion about the choice of theme for each poem and a section on the individual letters. It is printed on heavy glossy paper . "Jewish learning" according to Amazon Customer. This book was bought to help preschool and kindergarten age children. After being translated into english it has really lost the poetic value and the interest of the children.
