For more than two hundred years whaling was one of the greatest industries of New England. It contains over 175 songs, with music provided for most of them. Folk singers will especially welcome this rich source of material. This work is one of the largest collections of ballads and songs traditionally sung by the seamen. First published in 1964, Songs the Whalemen Sang is now reissued by Mystic Seaport.. And general readers will delight in these adventurous tunes and their tales of love, the sea, and the ship. There are songs of storm, shipwreck, love, tragedy, and death; gospel, parlor, bawdy songs, and more! The author's introduction details the history of whaling and discusses how and why these songs were recorded. In addition, he gives complete histories of the songs; relates the events the ballads celebrate; gives variants; and defines whaling expressions. This is an essential book for ballad students, folklorists, historians, and seamen. They were, in effect, a record of life on board a whaling ship. The songs whalemen sang

Must have books for any musician or maritime enthusiast Both this book and THE GAM are finest kind (as the fishermen say) and classics in the music field. My copy of the first edition of SONGS THE WHALEMEN SANG is much cherished and I'm delighted to have just purchased a copy of THE GAM, which is the succeeding volume. Mr. Huntington was my Latin and History teacher in high school, and he was not only an accomplished musician and musicologist, teacher and historical researcher, he had been a commercial fisherman so he wrote about boats, the sea and fishin. A lot of music, a gift for the period russ A lot of music, a gift for the period musician. Excellant as one would expect from a book published by Mystic Seaport.
