Instead, George, Nina, and those who touch them manage to push off from their unreasonably idealistic visions of the future and anchor, albeit tenuously, to the blessings of the present, resolved to remain standing amidst the forces that move them, as McCauley writes, "as inevitable as death and much stronger than love." --Bob Michaels. George is a gay kindergarten teacher, holding a torch of the inextinguishable variety for his not-worth-it ex-boyfriend. This should give me the extra push."The Object of My Affection gets you to care about this screwed-up lot of characters as they attempt to force the square peg of life-as-it-is-wished into the round hole of life-as-it-is. The focus of the novel is certainly on the relationship between these two, but McCauley also brings an entire fictional ensemble to life, richly nuanced with quirky humor. After a

Seth J Bookey said One of my all-time favorite books.. I re-read this, one of my all-time favorite novels, in the wake of expected to really hate the movie. Eventually, I liked the movie fine, but the movie barely resembles the book. While the movie focuses on the character of Nina, the book is written from the point of view and is about George Mullen, a gay man in his mid-twenties in 1987 New York City. Stephen McCauley skillfull enraptures the reader with situations in which we don't know what we would do in the characters' shoes. He more than adequately captures that feeling of being with so. Wittily engaging, beautifully accurate, astonishingly vivid A Customer Hardly ever I have found myself as engaged in a story as I became the moment I began reading The Object of My Affection. It became obvious right from the first pages that McCauley has an indescribable talent to see much deeper into the human mind and its dimensions than most of his contemporaries. The characters he has created and the ways in which he describes their innermost thoughts and feelings are so accurate, so detailed and so perceptive one cannot but gasp one's breath and read on. McCauley captivates his readers' attention with not only his exceptional expertise and knowledge of psychology but also his profound vision of s
